“Mr. Julian Tan elucidated many interconnected aspects of chemistry to develop a complete understanding of the material and guided me in developing effective study and revision skills.”

Energetic. Enlightening. Informative.

He elucidated many interconnected aspects of chemistry to develop a complete understanding of the material and guided me in developing effective study and revision skills. He taught us many important strategies for test environments so that we could perform to the best of our abilities.

He was genuinely very concerned about his students’ well-being, and always checking that we are coping with what we have in school.

“Essentially Mr Julian Tan taught us how to think so we learn, and not 'study'. To his future students: You people better know how lucky you are!”

Very clear! Mr Julian Tan explains things extremely well, and made sure the class understand the concepts of things rather than memorising and accepting facts. Precisely because we understand the concept of things, when we are met with problems that are slightly out of the box, we are able to apply the concepts and still solve the problems. He also provides summaries which allows us to see the big picture, before understanding the details. His incredibly neat handwriting and drawing of the cartoons also helped a lot. Sometimes he also uses helpful analogies so that we can picture the processes better. He also adds in things that may seem out of syllabus but are incredibly useful in aiding our understanding of the content in the limited H2 syllabus. Essentially Mr Julian Tan taught us how to think so we learn, and not 'study'.

To Mr Julian Tan: Thank you so much for being such a dedicated teacher (:

To his future students: You people better know how lucky you are!

“Mr Julian Tan’s questions were well-chosen because the discussions that we had about them often effectively teased out our doubts and misconceptions about the topic. Mr Tan's lessons were useful in helping us understand and apply concepts, hone our chemical skills and mind-set, and appreciate the links between topics.”

Mr Julian Tan is truly an exemplary educator. His teaching methods are thoughtfully crafted and effective. In class, he communicated concepts clearly and was always keen to understand and answer our questions. He would review concepts covered in previous lessons and discuss challenging questions to check how well we had understood those concepts. The questions were well-chosen because the class discussions that we had about them often effectively teased out our doubts and misconceptions about the topic. Mr Tan's lessons were useful in helping us understand and apply concepts, hone our chemical skills and mindset, and appreciate the links between topics.

Mr Tan's dedication is easily evident in the learning aids he would regularly prepare for us. He would send us annotated assignment answers, lists of pertinent concepts that we would have to keep in mind for a particular topic, and helpful chapter summaries. He has a keen understanding of our weaknesses and makes the effort to target his teaching toward covering those gaps in understanding - for example, he would go so far as to ensure that we mastered mathematical concepts (e.g. modulus and inequalities) that were essential for tackling chemistry equations. The guiding notes that he prepared were comprehensive, structured and insightful, and I am grateful to have had this valuable boost to my learning and revision.

“Before being in Mr Tan’s class, I would never have expected to be able to do well in chemistry, and yet I got an A for my A levels. This is something I attributed to being in his class, as his dedication pushed me to work harder to achieve the results he deserves from his students.”

Mr Tan is very engaging during his lessons and makes an effort to ensure all his students understand the materials he is teaching and are able to grasp the relevant concepts. He does not teach at surface value and does not expect you to memorize examples of concepts so you have something in your head. Conversely, he goes deeper into how such a mechanism comes about, helping students to develop a deeper and complete understanding of what they’re learning instead of just helping them to answer examination questions blindly.

I used to really hate chemistry and struggle with it. Even in university now, I still do sometimes. However, under Mr Tan’s guidance and teaching, I found it to be a lot easier to understand and apply it. And I actually found myself enjoying learning chemistry. Before being in Mr Tan’s class, I would never have expected to be able to do well in chemistry, and yet I got an A for my A levels. This is something I attribute to being in his class, as his dedication pushed me to work harder to achieve the results he deserves from his students.

To Mr Tan: thank you for not just helping me with understanding chemistry but also with seeing that the world is much bigger than the classroom. The way you care is inspiring and it’s an honour and blessing to have been in your chemistry and civics class.

To future students: Mr Tan can’t help you if you don’t help yourself. Be inspired to want to learn and keep striving to do better. I’m sure he will be proud of you nonetheless, if you just try your best.

“Chemistry lessons were so interactive and enriching that I never left class feeling like it was a wasted lesson.”

Mr Tan’s teaching style is very comprehensive which makes learning very pleasant. He is able to effectively explain and clarify the content being taught rather effortlessly, helping students internalise what he is teaching without having to actually memorise much. While learning based on the syllabus was important, Mr Tan focuses on helping his students grasp concepts even if they were not part of the syllabus so that we would be able to understand what is being taught better. After which, he would consolidate the required information needed for the preparation of our exams and gave very succinct and easy to understand summaries and concept maps that made studying and learning very effective. During class, he always makes it a point to ensure that the class is keeping up with what is being taught and puts in effort to keep the lesson interesting while staying on task. Chemistry lessons were so interactive and enriching that I never left class feeling like it was a wasted lesson. Should there have been doubts, Mr Tan was always ready to lend a helping hand, even out of classroom hours.

To Mr Tan: thank you so much for having taught me and building the confidence in me when it was slipping away. I will always be grateful for all the time and attention that you provided us with and for treating us like mature adults. Thank you so much for your guidance then and I sincerely hope that your future students are able to benefit and learn from you as much as I did. You are indeed a very dedicated and determined teacher that is admirable in both his teaching and interpersonal skills.

To Mr Tan’s future students: as long as you enter class with the intention to learn something, I can almost guarantee you that you would be able to, and most of the time, it would exceed your expectations. Never be afraid to voice your doubts, even if it is a very basic concept or a minor detail as Mr Tan would gladly respond to your queries. Do not be ashamed of doing badly but focus on the efforts you take to help yourself do better bit by bit and with that, Mr Tan would definitely be more than glad to guide you throughout your journey. Most of all, just try to enjoy learning and you will soon reap the benefits, even if it is not immediate.

“You will definitely benefit from Mr Tan's lesson no matter how good you are! There are so many things to learn and Mr Tan's knowledge in this field will undoubtedly answer every question you may have.”

Mr Tan has not only helped me to gain a better understanding of chemistry, but he has also taught me to appreciate it as his teachings are very holistic and enjoyable. I believe that a teacher who loves teaching, teaches his students to love learning and that is indeed true for Mr Tan. He has taught me to love the subject as well as to enjoy the process of learning.

Very interactive. Mr Tan reinforces the fundamentals and ensures that the student fully understand and grasp the concept. Otherwise, he would make effort to drill the basics through improvising and coming up with prompt questions, which also goes to show his experience and knowledge. He builds the basic concepts with very useful, detailed but easy-to-comprehend notes. He extends beyond the basics with well-chosen questions that well illustrate the different application methods and really expose the student to a range of different question types. Most importantly, he imparts the skills in answering and tackling challenging problems instead of spoon-feeding answers.

Mr Tan enabled me to grasp the concepts quickly in over a few sessions as it was an intensive course in the weeks leading up to A Levels. I can see the marked improvement in my understanding and ability to answer questions. He ensures that the basic questions can be scored and build upon the fundamentals to help the student to tackle tougher questions.

You will definitely benefit from Mr Tan's lesson no matter how good you are! There are so many things to learn and Mr Tan's knowledge in this field will undoubtedly answer every question you may have.
