“Mr Tan provokes thinking and understanding of the topic by asking us questions instead of providing us with the answers.”

Mr Tan was my chemistry tutor in JC. His classes are packaged in a way that he does not need to make use of sample questions in tutorials but still effectively able to make us understand the key ideas and the mechanism behind the chemistry concept which I feel that that's what a chemistry tutor should be like. Mr Tan provokes thinking and understanding of the topic by asking us questions instead of providing us with the answers. Thinking by ourselves is how one can truly understand and improve on a certain area if study, not providing the answers. And Mr Tan knows the art of provoking the thinking into us to improve us fundamentally.

“However, in only the first lesson, Mr Tan noticed and corrected many of the misconceptions and foundational gaps I didn’t even know I had. For the first time in JC, I felt comfortable asking stupid questions without being ridiculed. After the lesson, he worked with me individually through more delicate concepts and related questions. My confidence grew as I began to solve these more quickly.”

I knew about Mr Tan through my sister who knew him as a good chemistry teacher in her school. He was my chemistry tuition teacher for almost my whole A-level year. I barely survived the previous year being completely lost about A-level chemistry and could not understand or remember most chemistry lectures. I had no idea what was going on in all my school tutorial questions, so school tutorial classes that went through a selection of these very quickly were useless to me and made me more clueless as time went on. I could not even go for consultations because I did not know what to ask and would certainly have been mocked by my chemistry teacher. By the time I joined Mr Tan's tuition in March of Y6, I was convinced I would be 'below the C-level' for A-levels. However, in only the first lesson, Mr Tan noticed and corrected many of the misconceptions and foundational gaps I did not even know I had. For the first time in JC, I felt comfortable asking stupid questions without being ridiculed. After the lesson, he worked with me individually through more delicate concepts and related questions. My confidence grew as I began to solve these more quickly.

Mr Tan always spent a lot of time on the foundational concepts of each topic. Because different topics usually share the same underlying theories, this approach helped me gain a deeper understanding of each topic quickly. I noticed that I could solve atypical questions that some of my friends who relied on memorising could not. Mr Tan wrote questions and easy-to-follow notes that specifically tackled common pitfalls and misconceptions. Altogether, his teaching replaced lots of unnecessary memorising with understanding. Over time, I was able to complete my school tutorials and became increasingly confident in chemistry. I noticed that I began to ask better and more complex questions - my chemistry ability was at a level I would not have dreamed of at the start of the year. I could even identify errors in school answer sheets that months ago I could not even read. Thanks to Mr Tan, I needed him less academically over time.

When we were in doubt or struggling with certain topics, Mr Tan would put in extra hours to help us individually after class or even on separate days, showing his true dedication to his students. He was also quick in answering the questions we texted him at ungodly hours. He believed in me even when I was failing and kept me focused whenever I felt discouraged. That I forgot to bring my calculator into the exam hall for one of the chemistry A-level papers, which likely cost me a grade, was completely my own fault. However the confidence in and liking for chemistry I gained from Mr Tan goes beyond grades and has not diminished.

I came to know Mr Tan through a schoolmate who recommended his tuition for me in May 2017. Mr Tan is a very engaging and enthusiastic teacher who is able to make the most boring of topics lively and fun to learn about, he cracks jokes to break the monotony of lessons and gives numerous examples for us to try and understand.

He has helped me a lot after class by clarifying my doubts and is always happy to answer questions in class to benefit his students. He has personally encouraged me to work hard and pursue my goals in order to do well for H2 Chemistry.
